Save the planet or downgrade your lifestyle.
October 26th, 2006 by mjkennedy in World SpacesYou’ve heard the liberal left wing environmentalists and their bla bla bla about recycling and pollution and you’ve heard the right wing governments and their bla bla bla about saving jobs and the economy. Quite frankly both of them give me a headache and have me reaching for stress pills. Yet it does make you think; I mean, who wants to live in pollution and be scared of cancer or war? Yet for that matter who wants to be put on the street because you can’t pay the rent? Bit of a catch 22 …or is it?
Buying locally made and grown products and services improves your local economy by creating jobs in your area. This means less people sleeping in the streets and more assistance for schools and hospitals. Buying locally also means less freight and business people traveling and making our roads dangerous and polluting the air with airplanes, car and diesel fumes. We don’t need trucks and cars for long distance travel and freight. We have trains on magnetic rails and diesel trains can be run on biodiesel. It will cost a bit to set up but it will make your roads a whole lot safer and cleaner and freight a lot cheaper. Trees collect and filter our fresh drinking water and store it in the underground rivers and lakes, which supply our freshwater springs. Old growth trees are the most advance collectors of fresh drinking water. We pay too much for fresh water because logging companies are cutting down too many trees. Over half the world’s rain forest has been destroyed since the late 1940’s. We don’t need trees for paper. There are plenty of renewable resources as in bamboo, hemp, and flax that are cheaper to process and produce. The USA throws out enough wood and paper every year to heat 50 million homes for 30 years. 1 acre of hemp produces as much paper pulp in 4 months as 1 acre of trees that took twenty years to grow. We don’t need old growth trees for building. We have fast growing plantation trees and other alternatives like bamboo, which can be grown and made as strong as steel. Milk and dairy products create the beef industry; cows don’t give milk unless they are constantly having calves. The beef and dairy industry destroys forests on a massive scale depositing huge amounts of chemicals and hormones in our food and drinking water. We need and there are alternatives!
There is something for everyone to do to save money, help your local economy, and save this planet. From small things around the house to ways to improve your business and work place. It is about using environmentally friendly practices and products to save money. At the same time it is about creating local industry alternatives that don’t make your children cough or give you breast cancer or prostate cancer or cause war. There are natural remedies that will save you a small fortune in medical bills and several life times worth of pain and discomfort. New businesses, creating a safer and happier community and for lobbying major industries and governments. For all people in all walks of life, for we the people of this planet we call Earth. Saving the world is very simple if we all just do it. The thing they don’t tell you about saving the economy and the planet is that it is actually cheaper and easier to save the planet than destroy the planet. Corporations and Governments are getting you to give the planet to them and then getting you to buy it back all messed up.
To live planet friendly and maintain or improve your lifestyle and community; you don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to march in the streets and chain yourselves to trees to save the planet. Yes, the only way to save the world is to buy it back. But, to buy the world back, you don’t have to be a millionaire or major shareholder of a multinational corporation or be chairman of the board. You don’t even have to buy a piece of land, but it would help. You also don’t have to write letters to a politician if you don’t want to. All you do is make some everyday doable non life threatening changes in the way you care for your house and simply change some of the products you already buy to different brands. At work you can do the same by just changing a few of the products, services, and processes you use or produce and maybe some suppliers. Many planet friendly products are cheaper than the ones you are using now. If they aren’t you can bring the prices down by bulk buying with friends and associates.
Most house hold planet friendly products are made very close to your home, either in your state or province or at least in your own country. The more you buy locally the more jobs are created and the faster your local economy improves. Planet friendly products are the “quiet achievers”. Over the last twenty years, while computers have been hogging the limelight with faster and faster machines and more sophisticated software, planet friendly products have been working in the background. Silently growing into a multi billion- dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of people. It has also created jobs and business for people who were previously unemployable.
Planet friendly products and services have made folks who were once considered longhaired freaks and outcasts into respectable tax paying members of society. Maybe they didn’t get a haircut but they certainly did get a job.
